Charles Wellen Jr, digital artist
I am an ex-photographer turned digital artist.  Photography has been a
less-than-vital part of my life since my early teens.  I was enrolled in the
Famous Photographers School which I did not complete and I have sold
hundreds of pictures to newspapers in Western North Carolina while
slowly going bankrupt.  At one point I sold all my cameras and for years I
did not have any photographic equipment at all.  Got my first digital
camera in 2005, a tiny dual-use webcam and camera which is still
available for around twenty dollars.  Took thousands of pictures with it
and got hooked.  Before I had the camera, I had NeoPaint, a photoshop
type program, which enables digital painting.  I had been recycling art
downloaded from the internet to make birthday cards for my grand
daughters for years and when I started to manipulate my own photos my
career as a digital artist came into maturity.  Despite the fact that I am
known mainly as a nature photographer, which I am, all my photos are
modified in some way before they are shown publicly.  Of course, with
nature photography, that manipulation is not done to deceive, but to
enhance the realism of the image. I have never won an award, but I have
never entered a contest, either.  It's good to leave the possibility open.
